Emergency Services

Within CUPE, the vast majority of Emergency and Security Services (ESS) workers are paramedic workers – paramedics, communication officers, administrative, maintenance and support staff. CUPE is the largest union of paramedic or emergency medical (EMS) staff in Canada, representing nearly 11,350 workers.

In B.C., CUPE represents almost 4,400 Ambulance Paramedics of BC members who take emergency medical calls and dispatch, respond to emergency calls, providing medical treatment and transporting patients to a hospital emergency department. CUPE also represents nearly 600 communications professionals at E-Comm 911 who provide call-taking and dispatch services, information technology, and support services to 34 police agencies and 40 fire departments, as well as 99 per cent of initial 9-1-1 call response in B.C.
